Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd
We had read about this road and seen it on various trips up and down Hwy 1 but never rode it. What a mistake!
This is definitely a "go both directions" road. You can get to the overlook sights of the Big Sur coastline by going up the hill from Hwy 1 as the checkpoint for Fort Hunter Legget is about 14 miles East of Hwy 1 On this trip, this gate was unmanned. I suspect that on summer weekends or when maneuvers are going on, the gate is active. To traverse, the road between the checkpoints, you will need to provide 1) valid driver's license, 2) the vehicle's registration, and 3) proof of vehicle insurance. As of this writing (3/9/09) you are not required to have a "colored" vest.
Most of the road from the Western Checkpoint to the Coast is a 1-1/2 lane road - definitely stay right or you could be a hood oriment, watch for rocks and dirt on the surface. This area was burnt in the fires last summer ('08) so the National Forest was closed and in the major "gullies" (and in corners of course) there was water an mud that was scrapped off the pavement the day we went over (3/7/09).

The posted speed limits range from 20 to 40 MPH on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, and the LEOs take it seriously grin

Just west of the summit. Apparently, the fire was moving quite fast as it when through as there was a lot of charing but not a lot of trees down
