The plan for the day was to go via the back roads to the West Entrance to Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument which we'd not been to. We'd been into the East Entrance several times following the eruption '80.  No such luck!!

We woke to the smell of breakfast being prepared (thanks Vern and Jeanie) and the sounds of raindrops falling on the roof. About 10:30 it slowed to a drizzle, so we load up the bikes and a way we go.  We down to the Mt. St. Helens turn off and the visibility is about 100 yards at most so out to I5 and South we go in the rain.  It cleared up by the time we reached Kelso.  We crossed the Columbia Reiver to Hwy 30 to follow it into Portland. We had lunch in St. Helens, OR and took off some wet layers - the sun was out and it was nice and warm.  Got to the Saint John's Bridge and somebody started pouring buckets of water over our heads - we got soaked in less than 5 minutes!

Pressed on to our friends, Dan and Carol, place for the night.  After drying out and having dinner, the 4 of us head from the Willamette Sailing Club to watch the races and see who of our "old sailing buddies" might be there.  Catherine and I sailed a Thistle for 10 years when we lived in the Portland / Beaverton area in the mid '70s to late '80s.
