What a surpise we got when we woke up. It was raining!! By the time we had breakfast and got the bags packed, it has stopped except for a few sprinkles. Gased up and headed out. Bought our park passes, watchout Banff, here we come. As we climbed the mountains, the clouds get thicker and it starts getting damp - lots of mist and sprinkles but no real rain and the temps were in the high 40s and low 50's. Got to Highway 1 and slabbed it into Banff to find something to eat and warm up. Banff was crowded but we found a parking spot and a foodcourt. Got a bite to eat, we've had enough of "tourists" so off we go.
We rode Highway 1A to Lake Louise. Nice 2 lane road and great scenery. We don't think the Canadian Rockies have mountain tops. We've been there twice and both times the tops have been in the clouds.
Lake Louise was just like we remembered - pretty but lots of tourist - whoops, we're a tourist. Several folks on the FJRforum and Motocycle Touring Forum had said "don't miss Moraine Lake!!" Don't miss Moraine Lake!!
We thoughly enjoyed Moraine Lake. It was getting late and we needed to get to The Crossing at Saskatchewan River Crossing which is at the junction of Highways 93 and 11. I picked up this tip on the Motorcycle Touring Forum. Gas was expensive, room was expensive (but not that much different than Banff or Jasper). Dinner was limited as we arrived after the dining room had closed - either cafeteria (cooked to order, but limited) or bar (they give you the setup, you cook the meat). I wanted take pictures of the area but we got in as it was getting dark and the next morning it was raining! Oh well, next time.
Definitely need to go back and see this country when it is not raining and warmer!
