Before we left, I'd been following the posts in _V Star 1300 Riders_ of Delphi Forum regarding tire mileage of the V-Star1300. Catherine had about 5,400 miles on her tires before we left on the trip. I "figured" based on other's experiences, her riding style and the wear on the rear tire, we could make the trip without replacing the tire. Took a good a good at it on the way to breakfast; boy it has worn down fast. Called
Bob, a friend from the VStar 1300 forum, "where do you get your tires in Durango" and he said call HandleBar Motorsports and talk to..... I called Handlebar Motorsports; "do you have a rear tire for the V-Star 1300 and if I get there this afternoon or early tomorrow (Saturday) can you mount it then?", "Yep, see you then!!".
Finished breakfast, put on some warmer layers and off we go. We didn't sightsee as much as we might have done on this section as we wanted to get the tire mounted today so we'd have a full day for the planned Durango-Dolores-Ridgeway-Silverton-Durango loop we were planning to do with Bob. Definitely want to go back and spend more time from Lake City to Durango area, looked like some cozy places in Lake City to stay, and do some of the mining exhibits in Creede. Stopped in Creede for a bio-break, a shack and shed
some clothes. We got to Handlebar Motorsports about 4pm, pulled up to the Service door, "you must be the Eppersons", and the bike was ready within the hour. Thank you "Handlebar Motorsports for fitting us in your busy schedule and the speedy and excellent service!!
We stayed in the Best Western Rio Grande Inn in downtown Durango a couple of blocks from the train station. We had a room with a balcony from which you could see the station. Nice room, they supplied towels to wash the bikes, and it was in easy walking distance to very good eats and beer. Bob met us at the motel and we walked over to Francisco's Restaurante y Cantina for drinks and dinner. Over dinner, we talked about the next days ride to Ouray and Silverton. There were about 12 to 18 other
motorcycles in the parking lot that evening.
