We're originally planned to go to Arches National Park (detail map). A couple of bikers had recommened going Northeast on Hwy 128 along the Colorado River and then to I70. We decided we'd save Arches for another trip and headed out Hwy 128.
It is gorgeous for 30 miles from the junction of Hwy 191 and 128 where 128 crosses the Colorado River and heads North to I70. From there to I70 and West, it's rolling high DESERT. The good thing is I70 is fast. Stopped at a truck stop in Green River for lunch and headed West. The geography from there all the way to Brians Head, Utah was interesting. As we got closer to Aurora, the sky to the South and West was getting to look like we were going to get wet! We got to Sevier, the junction of I70 and Hwy 89, and headed South to Panguitch. We were on the leading edge of rain and the microbursts were something else. We got damp but not wet - thank you.
We stopped in Panguitch for fuel, bio-break, a snack, and then headed to Brians Head on Hwy 143. We didn't get wet but it sure got colder as we got higher. The resort is approximately 9,000' and was at the base of the clouds - burrrrrr. Boy did we get a surprise - Cedar Breaks National Monument. We'd forgotten about it as Bryce Canyon get most of the recognition. We stayed at the Cedar Breaks Lodge & Spa. We had garage parking, breakfast and diner was good, and you could get a beer (or hardstuff) by joining their "club".
